The democratic origin is individualism. The
liberal origin is also individualism. The
individualistic origin is self. Therefore,
democracy and liberalism are premised on
self establishment. That is, the purpose
of democratic education and liberal education
is in self establishment.
If the man who can control self action neither
by the impulse nor the desire comes to occupy
a social general trend, democracy will collapse.
The right of the freedom represented by freedom
of speech also serves as a crisis. This is
because it is an individualistic defeat.
That it becomes impossible to control self
means because they is self loss. This is
the principle of democratic education.
Democracy is the society on condition of
the self which carried out autonomy. Therefore,
a democratic country duty-izes education.
It is said that self will be established
by compulsory education. The purpose of the
compulsory education of our country is also
self establishment.
Then, is this purpose protected, as for the
present compulsory education? While an organization
and dissidence side also borrows a democratic
name, the present condition is having trampled
down this purpose and the principle. So,
democracy of Japan and liberalism are facing
a crisis.
This is treason to a democratic state and
a liberal state.
Active will is in self. It is democracy by
unearthing and developing this self autonomy
that active will will be made to establish
and the autonomous society on the basis of
an individual will be built.
That is, a subject is in a student side.
The present educational system forgets this.
And not to mention it establishes self, self
is made to lose on the contrary.
Consequently, the man who cannot suit society,
and the man who cannot make human relations
are produced.
It is environment to make self establish.
Self is touched off by consciousness and
experience and wakes up. Environment touches
off such consciousness and experience. Therefore,
democratic education begins from the place
which improves the environment which encloses
a student.
The educational spot is the society itself.
Democratic education is because the purpose
is in making democratic fundamental structure
master.
An educational subject is in a student and
a guardian. However, since minors are not
accepted in suffrage, as for a compulsory
education period, a guardian executes this
by proxy. Therefore, the educational sovereignty
in a compulsory education period is in a
guardian, especially parents. A guardian
has the right in which its opinion is made
to reflect to a school rule the curriculum
of a school, a textbook, a teacher, and at
large. Duty occurs rather than there is a
right. The right which chooses a textbook
is not a publishing company or a teacher,
either, and is in a student and a guardian
also in school. The problem of the present
educational system has the student and guardian
in being eliminated from the educational
spot.
It is host and guest's fall that the student
who is a sovereign, and the guardian obey
the school and the teacher. Moreover, it
is contrary to democratic soul to form the
society [ exclusive ] where the school was
isolated from status society.
Democracy is premised on people being actively
concerned with politics. In order to concern
people with politics actively, it is necessary
to attach democratic structure and a democratic
rule to the body. For that purpose, the school
had to be opened by the community. To management
of a school, a local resident and a guardian
concern themselves positively. The relation
between a school, and a guardian and a local
resident is looked like [ the relation between
a company and a stockholder ].
A ceremony, and form are made light of in
the education of postwar our country. Although
there is direction considered that a ceremony,
and 典礼 and form are feudal, there is no
organization in which just democracy respects
a ceremony, 典礼, and form. That is because
democracy is not personal organization but
the organization based on an idea called
law. If based on what [ ideological and abstract
] called an idea at all, it is necessary
to express to a certain form. So, a ceremony
and 典礼 are needed. Moreover, originally
with democracy, it is based on procedure.
Form is important in procedure.
The starting point of democratic education
is making self establish, learning this procedure
and form by study and experience. For that
purpose, you have to set the educational
spot in the actual world. The role of a school
is assisting the education in the actual
world. That is, it is the state of educational
original that democracy enables it for something
to understand personally what freedom is
through actual human relations and an actual
occurrence.
There must be a belief in the origin of courtesy.
The essence of a belief is a thought principle.
It will be summarized by saying that the
problem in human relations is troublesome
if there is no belief. a result -- trouble
-- not applying -- if -- what -- you may
carry out -- と -- saying -- 事にな . However,
the concept of being troublesome lacks the
fundamental standard which stands up man's
act.
A teacher teaches the fundamental form of
courtesy and the student itself is made to
master the soul of the origin through it.
It is the true figure of democratic education.
The present educational system is performing
that it is completely the opposite of democracy
to the bottom of a democratic name. Therefore,
it has set in the situation also with critical
democracy and liberalism. As it is, if it
is left, the society where any are democratic
will collapse or the state itself will be
ruined. It is repeating the fault which the
school and the teacher committed at prewar
days.
The starting point of democratic education
must not forget to be in the free will in
which the student did autonomy, i.e., self.
And just their future and the possibility
in children should recollect that it is the
most important precious article.
Don't crush children's possibility under
the assumed name of democratic education.
